The construction
of “Purandara Bhavana”, started in
March 2003, was substantially completed by July 2004. The cultural
centre has been designed to encompass the following facilities:
• A hall which can accommodate
600 persons in perfect acoustic conditions for staging performances
in music, dance and drama and conferences
• A Mini Hall with facilities for lectures, product launches,
exhibitions and similar activities
• A number of class rooms for conducting music and dance classes
• A library to house literature on music and dance with multimedia
and recording facilities and to encourage research in music and
dance forms by students/scholars
On 23rd July, 2004 – a day that
proved to be truly memorable in the cultural calendar of Bangalore
City, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, His Excellency the President
of India declared “Purandara Bhavana” open and
dedicated it to the citizens of Karnataka in the presence of a distinguished
gathering comprising of members of the Sabha, special invitees and
the cognoscenti of the city. The inaugural ceremony was presided
over by His Excellency the Governor of Karnataka, Sri. T.N. Chaturvedi.
Sri N. Dharam Singh, the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Karnataka,
was a Special Invitee. During his address, Dr. Kalam urged that
the Sabha, apart from its routine activities, should become a Centre
of Excellence in uncovering and promoting talent and encouraging
research.
‘Purandara Bhavana’
has now become a multi-faceted concrete reality in the eastern part
of Bangalore which lacked such a facility for cultural activities.
Built on a 12000 sq.ft. site amidst sylvan surroundings, it provides
an ideal ambience for cultural programmes, corporate meetings, product
launches, exhibitions, lecture demonstrations, discourses, annual
general meetings, seminars, conferences, etc. The Bhavana has three
areas available for use namely the Main Auditorium, the Mini Hall
situated in the basement and a Lecture Hall (also in the basement)
to suit the requirements of different kinds of events.
The acoustically treated Main Auditorium
that has been built at two levels has a ground floor to accommodate
450 and a mezzanine level that can seat another 150. There is room
to add another 100 moulded type seats if required. The lighting
and ventilation have been specially designed for efficiency and
comfort. The Mini Hall located in the basement can comfortably accommodate
150 persons while the Lecture Hall can accommodate a minimum of
100 persons.
