Indiranagar Sangeetha Sabha is
situated in Indiranagar, Bangalore, popularly
known as the 'Garden City' of India. Being the
capital of Karnataka state, Bangalore has a rich
cultural tradition that has sustained the age-old
art of Music and Dance. Indiranagar Sangeetha
Sabha was formed with the main objective of
carrying forward this rich cultural heritage and
popularising it among the young and old.
Since its
inauguration in July 2004 by the President of
India, during the course of which he forcefully
urged Indiranagar Sangeetha Sabha to become a
Centre for Excellence,
Purandara Bhavana, the Centre of the
Sabha, has indeed come a long way.

A land with a rich
and varied cultural heritage, India can
justifiably take pride in its wide variety of
music and dance forms. Over the centuries,
classical music and dance have evolved due to the
keen interest and patronage by the erstwhile
rulers and the aristocracy. Changing times,
however, brought about a situation where, without
encouragement, the Indian traditions threatened
to wither away. The support of all art-lovers
would, therefore, be crucial in helping to
preserve our hoary tradition and in providing a
strong platform for Indian classical music and
dance to thrive again. India also has a long
tradition of drama which too needs to be
nurtured. |

Against this
background, Indiranagar Sangeetha Sabha has been
an institution that has engaged itself in the
promotion of classical music and dance, ever
since it was founded in January 1986. It is a
registered trust that was authored by Late Sri A.
Alagappan, a leading industrialist and a band of
dedicated trustees. Presently, the Sabha has over
530 members. For more than 19 years, Indiranagar
Sangeetha Sabha has been instrumental in filling
a cultural vacuum in the eastern part of
Bangalore city. |
